A cordon and search operation was launched on the night of 16 November 2011 in a village of Lohit district in Arunachal Pradesh, under Major Himanshu Panwar.The officer after establishing an effective cordon of suspect house tactfully evacuated all innocent members of the house and ordered the terrorists to surrender. Instead of surrendering, the terrorists started indiscriminate fire while trying to escape. Undeterred by heavy firing and unmindful of his own safety, the officer brought down heavy and accurate fire on the terrorists resulting in killing of two terrorists on the spot. Major Himanshu Panwar displayed conspicuous gallantry, exemplary leadership, and dedication to duty in fighting the terrorists.
