On this day in 1962 Major Shaitan Singh the Quartermaster of 13 KUMAON
had reached Rezang La to take over Charlie Company. Read a brief and know how he got to Rezang La and became OC of Charlie Company.
13 KUMAON was located in Baramulla, Kashmir after spending a tenure in Ambala. The unit surprisingly received orders to move to Leh in September. Advance party & gradually main body left for Leh via road leaving Quartermaster Major Shaitan Singh in charge of rear party.
Major Shaitan Singh was due for his annual leave, but due to this sudden move his leave was getting delayed. 13 KUMAON reached Leh and were told that they'll move to Chushul in March to replace 1/8 Gorkha Rifles who were located there since 1961.
Charlie Company located in Leh was under the command of Captain Balbir Singh Lamba who moved for a course on 2 October. CO, Lt Col HS Dhingra asked Major Shaitan to move to Srinagar and from there to move for leave.
The party stayed in Srinagar for a few days, one day unit officer Captain RK Khanna invited Major Shaitan Singh for lunch where Captain Khanna's mother got some gifts for Major Shaitan as he was supposed to go home. But same day he got a call from CO to move quickly to Leh.
In a couple of days Major Shaitan found himself on the road to Ladakh. By then 13 KUMAON had moved to Chushul. Bravo Coy under Captain HS Chouhan had moved to Chushul on 13 Oct and took over Magar Hill, while Delta Coy reached and took over Tsaka La under Capt RV Jatar
Alpha Coy under Major GN Sinha was located with Bn HQs at Chushul Airfield and Charlie Coy under Lt Prem Kumar reached Chushul on 26 October and was asked to reach Rezang La and relieve a platoon of 7 J&K Militia.Soon, on 28 Oct Major Shaitan Singh reached Chushul with the rear party. On 30 Oct Capt Gurdeep Singh also reached Chushul. CO wanted a senior officer to be at Rezang La, so he sent Major Shaitan Singh to take over C Coy from Lt Prem Kumar & Lt Prem was sent to Magar Hill. Now it was clear to him that he is not going home so, he wrote to his friend: "You are quite correct in your assumption regarding my leave. Don't worry it is not that important. I shall have no regrets if I do not get leave. Duty comes first always and every time".On 13th Nov he wrote his last letter home & on 17th. he received a letter from home which read; rumours of your martyrdom have spread in Jodhpur. He shared it with Capt DD Saklani on the radio and laughed, but deep down he knew the end was near. And came the 18th November.
